GCW Gandhi Nagar lifts overall trophy, GCW Parade emerges runner up

Jammu, Feb 15: The Government College for Women (GCW), Gandhi Nagar on Saturday clinched the overall trophy in Inter-College Debate Contest-2014, organized by The Tribune Group of newspapers here. The debate was held on ‘Proactive Media Exposes Maladministration and Contributes to Good Governance’.
The GCW team comprising of Prabjot Kour and Sanam Sherif Khan received a cash prize of Rs 10,000 for performing best.
 The Government College for Women (GCW), Parade, Shriya Raina and Aditi Dubey clinched first runners up trophy while Government Degree College (GDC), Hiranagar represented by Mitali Sharma and Kumerjeet Chajgotra were adjudged second runners up in the contest. The contest was organized at the Brig Rajinder Singh auditorium in University of Jammu.
Shriya Raina of GCW, Gandhi Nagar and Shivham Sharma, Government Degree College, Hiranagar were adjudged best speakers of the contest. They won the special prize of Rs 5,000 each.
All other participants were given Rs 1,000 cash awards and Certificates of Participation.
The GCW Parade which secured 2nd place and GDC Hiranagar which secured 3rd place in the contest received a cash prize of Rs 8000 and Rs 6000 respectively.
Nearly 30 participants drawn from 16 colleges of all the 10 districts of Jammu region participated in the debate contest.   
The debate was divided into two categories, speakers for the motion (positive role of the fourth estate and against the motion (negative role) thereby elaborating on various issues pertaining to the present social, economic and political setup of the country and state.
The panel of judges included former Bureau Chief PTI, M.K Bangroo, Professor Department of English, University of Jammu, Prof Posh Charak and former bureaucrat and columnist, Daya Sagar.
Minister for Higher Education, Muhammad Akbar Lone was the chief guest on the occasion, while Editor-in-Chief, The Tribune Group of Newspapers, Raj Chengappa and General Manager, Vinay Verma shared the podium.
Lone said media was an important watchdog to keep a check on the functioning of the democratic institutions.
“Media is like a sword hanging over the heads of the government and ministers making it an important part of democratic setup”, Lone said.
Raj Chengappa highlighted the history of The Tribune Group from its start in Lahore now in Pakistan and post-partition growth in India.
Earlier, majority of the participants aired their opinions on the role of the mass media in highlighting the corruption in the society and keeping check on the functioning of the government both at centre and in Jammu and Kashmir.
The speakers who spoke against the motion said that at times, mass media plays in the hands of high and mighty thereby suppressing the voice of poor and downtrodden.
